Rare News Son & Daughter

have less than exciting first starts at prairie meadows

Prairie Meadows, IA, August 20, 2007—Gotta Newsflash and Fred Coles, a Rare News daughter and son, had their first starts at Prairie Meadows, in Iowa. Both 2-year-olds were hauled in from Oklahoma Saturday, August 18.

Gotta Newsflash raced in a 350-yard maiden race that evening (having just arrived and having never run under lights before). She was the only horse in the race that hadn't had at least one out before. Gotta Newsflash finished 7th with a speed index of 74 (:18.338). Not too great -- but her owner told us she stumbled at the start, then got pinched in the middle of some horses.

Both trainer and jockey feel she will do much better on her next out. By then she will get acclimated to her new track, to the lights, and will have had plenty of time for rest and conditioning.

Fred Coles raced August 20 at Prairie Meadow in a 300-yard maiden claimer. He started out from the #2 hole. Fred Coles, too, ran green (it was his first out ever). According the his trainer, Fred Coles was headed for 1st or 2nd place, then the gelding saw the tote board, all lit up, and having never seen that before, he started veering away from it. His jockey pulled him up to keep him from weaving from lane to lane in the midst of horses that had already raced several times before (some were even stakes finalists). Fred Coles ended up finishing 4th (with a speed index of 71) behind a Struttin To Beduino filly (she finished with a speed index of 82), A First to Flash filly, and a My Designated Driver gelding. Fred was ridden by Tad Leggett, too.

Hardly barn-burner starts for either horse, but they showed steady effort -- and their owner and trainer feel positive about them. Both horses came back good. We know we'll continue to be some of their loudest fans, watching, hoping for the best and cheering them on enthusiastically!

Rare News Son & Daughter

Post Fast Workouts in preparation for first starts

Sallisaw, OK, August 10, 2007—Two Rare News 2-year olds belonging to Scott and Lindsey Mitchell-Pruett, of Texas, were among 31 two-year-olds performing timed workouts at Blue Ribbon Downs, on August 10. Fred Coles, out of the Moon Lark mare, Ah Yes, and Gotta Newsflash, out of Gettin Into Cash by Roll The Cash, finished in the #1 and #3 times respectively, with times of :12.58 and :12.59. They are trained by Don Mourning.

http://www.equibase.com/premium/eqbWorkoutsDisplay.cfm?TRK=BRD&CY=USA&DATE=08/10/2007&STYLE=EQB

Always competitive as weanlings and yearlings at Circle D (along with A News Streak), Fred Coles and Gotta Newsflash ("Kate") posted amazingly close times in their workouts -- and how cool is it that these two nice Rare News horses finished in the #1 and #3 spots out of so many other horses?!

Fred Coles and Gotta Newsflash will have their first races soon, either at Blue Ribbon Downs or at Prairie Meadows, in Iowa.

In this picture taken a year ago (August 2006), A News Streak, Gotta Newsflash & Fred Coles hang out together at Circle D Ranch, in St. Ignatius, Montana.

A NEWS STREAK QUALIFIES

FOR THE AUGUST 11TH JOHN HOAK/CAPITOL FUTURITY

Boise, ID, July 28, 2007—A NEWS STREAK, si 99, son of the very first mare Rare News was bred to, placed 2nd in his trial heat and qualified for the John Hoak/Capitol Racing Futurity, to be held August 11, in Boise. He became the 6th fastest qualifier for the $60,000 futurity by running 400 yards in :19.956 seconds.

The fastest qualifier (:19.592) was the outstanding Special Leader gelding, Gomez Palacio, owned by Robert W. Gutke and trained by Jay Pitcher. Gomez Palacio, si 106, has 6 wins in 7 starts and over $40,000 in earnings. He won the Ford Northwest Juvenile Challenge in June. Checker, a son of Check Him Out, owned by Denny Boer and Kelly Spackman, was the 2nd fastest qualifier with a time of :19.806.

A News Streak was bumped good at the start of the race, but quickly came back to take the lead in the race -- until Showem And Shake Em, a gelding by Royal Shake Em out of Brown Sugar Kate, by Lanes Leinster, ran him down and finished first (with a time of :19.914 and a speed index of 98). A News Streak had a 97 speed index for the trial. He came back sound and strong after running his first 400 yard race.

A News Streak is trained by Brent Bowman (who qualified two horses for the John Hoak/Capitol Racing Futurity). He was ridden by Mark Boag.

A NEWS STREAK FINISHES 4TH

IN THE FORD NORTHWEST JUVENILE CHALLENGE

Boise, ID, June 30, 2007—A NEWS STREAK failed in his first attempt to get earn some blacktype (horses finishing in the first three positions in stakes races earn "blacktype") in the Ford Northwest Juvenile Challenge, at Les Bois Park, in Boise, on June 30, 2007.  He came in 4th in the 350 yard race with a time of :17.668 (and a speed index of 98).

Finishing first in the Ford Northwest Juvenile Challenge was the outstanding Special Leader gelding, Gomez Palacio (owned and bred by Robert W. Gutke, of Smithfield, Utah), in :17.433 seconds (speed index 104). Gomez Palacio was also the fastest qualifier to the race. Coming in 2nd was the Stoli filly Hannahs Halo, and 3rd place finisher was Showem And Shake Em (a gelding by Royal Shake Em). A News Streak, 4th place, was followed by Proudestchick (by Proudest Effort), Oso Gone (by Panther Mountain), Cee Me Shake (by Royal Shake Em), and Rum Running Okey (by Okey Dokey Dale).

A News Streak, by Rare News, was ridden by jockey Roy Badillez, who said after the race that when A News Streak got pinched in behind the three fastest finishers (running in a V-formation), A News Streak strained and fought with everything he had to get through. The jockey even had to pull him back a little to keep him from going over the top of one of the horses in an effort to get ahead. The jockey told trainer Brent Bowman that A News Streak was one of the "gutsiest horses" he has ever ridden.

A News Streak has a record of 1-1-0 from 4 starts. His highest speed index is 99, he is a stakes qualifier with earnings of $6,061. He came back sound from his race and will continue his pursuit of blacktype!

A NEWS STREAK QUALIFIES

FOR FORD NORTHWEST JUVENILE CHALLENGE!

Boise, ID, June 15, 2007—A News Streak, by Rare News became the 5th fastest qualifier for the Ford Northwest Juvenile Challenge on June 15, when he ran 350 yards in :17.623 (and earned a speed index of 99).

Approximately 70 well-bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses from several states competed in 7 trials, each vying for one of the ten coveted spots. A News Streak, ridden by Brian Long, broke fast, then veered out a little, then straightened out and quickly gained the lead. He was well ahead of everyone, until Oso Gone, a nice Panther Mountain filly, came on strongly from the outside and outran him by less than a neck. Nevertheless, his time was still fast enough to grant him a place in the June 30 Challenge Futurity.

A News Streak, a very calm, professional, consistent sorrel gelding, is trained by Brent Bowman. Brian Long is his jockey. He is owned by Michael and Teri Dinnell and Roberta Archer. From three starts, A News Streak has one first, one second and was once fourth. His speed index is now 99.

Film finish strip from the 4th race shows Oso Gone jetting past #3, A News Streak.
Third place finisher is #6, Fountain of Fire (a son of First Down Dash), & the gorgeous gray horse is

Band of Sambaso, a horse bred by Circle D Horses. (Band of Sambaso, #5, was bumped hard at the start.

He finished with a time of :17.862 & a speed index of 92, but failed to qualify for the Challenge Futurity.)

The ten qualifiers include Gomez Palacio, gelding by Special Leader, 17:441;  Oso Gone, filly by Panther Mountain, :17.590; Strawflyin Johnny, gelding by Strawflyin Buds, :17.591; Proudestchick gelding by Proudest Effort, :17.603; A News Streak, gelding by Rare News, :17.623; Rum Running Okey, gelding by Okey Dokey Dale, :17.670;  Hannas Halo, filly by Stoli, :17.670;  Dk Give Alittle Bit, filly by Separatist, :17.679;  Cee Me Shake Em, filly by Royal Shake Em, :17.689; Showem And Shake Em, gelding by Royal Shake Em, :17.721. A NEWS STREAK GETS FIRST WIN!

Boise, ID, May 28, 2007—Literally the first son of Rare News, A News Streak, became Rare News's first race winner on Memorial Day. He also finished ahead of sons of two leading AQHA sires, Stoli and Check Him Out.

A News Streak, a gelding out of A Lil Streakin Jewel, stumbled a bit coming out of the gates in a maiden race at Les Bois Park, but quickly flew to first position. Then, finding himself in the lead, he seemed to hesitate -- until a son of champion Stoli came at him. A News Streak kicked it into gear again and drove to the finish line, finishing first (by a nose) with a speed index of 88 (300 yards in .15:831).

Coming in 2nd was Night Time Stoli (Stoli - Night Lines by Strawfly Special), and 3rd LP Check This Effort (Check Him Out - Fishers Effort by Fishers Dash), a length behind the 2nd place horse.

A News Streak is trained by Brent Bowman and was ridden by Brian Long. He is owned by Michael and Teri Dinnell and Roberta Archer. For those who gambled on this handsome horse, he paid $16.60 to win.

From just 2 horses on the track so far (with only 3 starts between them), freshman sire Rare News has 1 race winner, 1 third place horse & he's a 100% ROM sire!
